‘Design is thinking made visible’ -Saul Bass, he was the man who forever changed the moving titles sequences for films
The Psycho title sequence involves deconstructed type which became a very big thing in the 70s which was challenged by Cranbrook School of Art under the direction of Professors Michael and Katherine McCoy. They designed a special issue of Visible Language on contemporary French literary aesthetics, published in the summer of 1978. The students were asked to develop their strategy: to systematically disintegrate the the series of essays by expanding the spaces between lines and words and pushing the footnotes into the space normally reserved for the main text.
Deconstructed type doesn’t always have to be readable or understandable, it can also be used to create a new texture or an abstract piece of art
