start with a simple shape and then add sound under the MoGraph editor.
When the song is uploaded you can select a box around the whole graph or you can section it off like in the picture to create a different effect such as deeper and higher sounds
these can be useful to show the sound in different ways, peak will show the up and downs of the music, average only shows the space in between the sound waves so it will only cause subtle movements to what its connected to and step works at a 0 and 1 basis, so when the sound waves are high its on and when its low its off
within sound click sound and then attach a linear field
have the xpresso tag come from the sound MoGraph
drag both the sound and the sphere into the xpresso
the red is output and the blue is the input. With the sound make the output property object
and make the Sphere input property radius
even with having input and output properties on both objects they still can’t link up so add a sample box and put it in between them. When strength has been added you can link up the sound object output with the sample effector input. The most important output from the sample is ‘strength’ so add that output.
Then from the sample also add Result in there and attach the strength from the sample output to the result input and it will give you a number
add a range mapper operator and attach the sample strength output to the range mapper input and then attach the range mapper output to another result operator and it shuuld give you the same number as the other result operator
click on the range mapper and change the output upper amount from 1 to 100
this changes the result of the second one to 100x the previous number. Then finally attach the range mapper output to the sphere radius input. This should cause the sphere to react to the music
the result operators aren’t needed for the effect to work it was just to see the outputs so they can be deleted.

wave principle

To make things look like they are flowing you can make separate shape layers and then use the pick whip to attach a layer to a parent in which it would usually be attached to in real life. Stagger the movements.
use expressions to copy the exact rotation of the opposite wing at the same time. This saves time instead of having to rotate each part of the wing separately and it also therefore being not entirely equal

Anchor points can be easily moved by pressing the Y key and then dragging it to where you want. When animating a character you need to think about where bends and joints will be, you can use snapping to get these points exact so they will be able to bend how they are supposed to.

For the wings to look like they’re flowing naturally you have to stagger the movements on each layer so they go one after the other but still keep dragging each other along because they are attached.

the X position is just one straight diagonal line because I just wanted my shape to move straight across the screen to the other side
I have created a bend in the Y position because I’m wanting my shape to jump, I have also put two mini jumps before and after the main one to make it seem as though the shape is preparing for the jump and then when its landing it has a little bounce to the shape so it is just a natural reaction to landing.
By editing the scale of the shape throughout my video it makes it seem as though the weight of the shape is distributed naturally through the effects of the jump. Such as when the shape lands the width of it spreads out whereas the height lowers as though its pushing out due to the weight and the consistency of the shape, then it returns to its original size. I’ve also done it when the shape is at the highest point of the jump, the height extends and the width gets tighter to also shoe the weight distribution of the soft shape.

music video

I used rotoscoping to make it look as though the videos were being watched on the TV. I really like the cut out fake background because its looks more like a collage and hand made which i want throughout the video.
I used this piece of footage from another one of the bands songs
In this part of the video I’m making it seem as though channels are being flicked through
This audio was made louder than the others because it has more of a prominent statement and it leaves a lasting impression on the viewer because it is also the last video seen on the TV before it goes static again
Rotoscoping was done on the lips of the person singing it and also more hand drawn stills to make the font move and change
I used a simple font to read some of the lyrics out to the viewer
I really like the look of this video, it has a lot of texture and the stolen video look relates more to the lyrics ‘i need rest now’ because its like they’re desperate for it
more drawn stop motion to show some tired eyes.
These are stills of the band in some geometric style I did on photoshop, looses sense of reality and has a drawn cut out quality which I have throughout the video

Character development

To make a character look more realistic it usually will move in arcs. Use references to see how things move.

puppet pins

The puppet pin tool creates a mesh, which can act as bones in a character as they create a smoother move and can allow you to manipulate the object to make a movement look more realistic.

If you place the pins in places where joints are in the body then the move looks the most accurate.

this is how the whole composition can be zoomed in on. Attach the null to the camera with the whip.

Attach the shape scale to the slider of the audio you want to parent it by using the pick whip tool of the shape scale to the audio slider.
You can edit the slider points by selecting them all and making them bigger and smaller. By doing this it also edits the size of your attached shape to make the size become bigger when the slider points are higher.

rotoscoping

I recorded a video of me lighting a candle. Then when I put it into After Effects I used masks to trace around my movements in short intervals to create this rotoscope style. Then I made 2 new block colour layers one with a lighter colour and one with a darker shade of the same colour. Then I made it so the lighter colour was completely opaque which showed the darker colour underneath and as the video went along I proceeded to make the lighter colour less opaque and therefore the background seemed lighter. This gave the effect that as the candle was being lit the background became lighter.

use the pen tool on the correct layer to create masks of the videos which you have
click the timer on mask path and edit the positions of the anchors as you move through intervals on the timeline to follow the shape of the video
