clean and simple san serif logo, looks professional and current
Very uniform and organised way of showing the work with all descriptions obviously seen underneath each item
Columbia
When you enter the website it has a short motion graphic introducing the logo and the name of the company before it shows the website as a whole, I like this idea
The logo has a serif font which to me adds a bit of history and legacy to the brand showing its been around for quite a few years. The vector logo gives me a very 80s vibe.
only using red white and black for their identity, they keep it simple for the artists they’re promoting to contrast and show through their branding. They let their work be the most important thing.
Everything can be found in the side bar, easy to understand and navigate yourself around the website
Rough Trade
The font is very much representing the title with its rough edges and the lack of uniform lettering
Theoretical framework- The theoretical framework is the structure that can hold or support a theory of a research study. The theoretical framework introduces and describes the theory that explains why the research problem under study exists
Critique- a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory.
‘Reading’- a particular interpretation of a text or situation.
Analysis- detailed examination of the elements or structure of something.
Hypothesis- a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Synthesis- the combination of components or elements to form a connected whole
Terry Eagleton said ‘There is no reading of a work which is also a re-writing’ this means that everything can always be interpreted differently by the reader.
Visual communication is exploring the idea that a visual message, with or without accompanying audio or text, has the power to inform, educate, or persuade a viewer. It’s the conveyance of ideas and information in forms that can be read or viewed.
Anthony Burrill (2002)
International Yves Klein Blue (1947)
‘An idea that is not dangerous, is unworthy of being called an idea’ = BE AMBITIOUS
Stephen Heller- Design authorship
Command own creativity
Be your own client
Film theories ‘auteur’
50s advertisement- make the product look nice, artists spend time doing realistic paintings and drawings of product, but nothing in your face because there was only one go to brand for a product. These days products have to compete for popularity because there are so many different brands for the same product, they do this through good packaging and clever advertisements.
In commercial and conceptual design- Experimental JetSet – Tshirtism (2001)
It questions what design really is about and what the Tshirt means to people without any more context.
Sol LeWitt – ‘The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.’
Daniel Eatock, conceptual design
Design as a reflection of its moment on societal or individual level.
Design is a reaction of whats happening around it.
This idea relates to the brief because it’s something which represents humans and all living things on this earth, it runs through us all, it makes us who we are, literally. It carries on through your family even when you are long gone
Complex molecule which contains all information necessary to build and maintain an organism. All living things have DNA within their cells
Idea: a long line of DNA representing it going down your family line through time (start off in black & white to show a long time ago by relating to old films only bing in B&W, then start adding faded colour, then primary colours and finally full colour.)
Hvass & Hannibal- I love this graphic, I would use a cartoon look like this within my own work.
Relationships
Idea 1: do a graph involving all of these lines of closeness overlapping each other and colour coded. represents how the majority of peoples lives are spent in various relationships.
Life Lines- lines of closeness to a basic group of people in the majority of peoples lives
This is my inspiration for this idea. I like how it simplifies the complex way in which our lives cross and intertwine with others throughout our whole existence.
Idea 2- heart
Heart rates and the heart, the main feature of the body.
I like this style or art by Steve Wilson, i would like to use this style within my own work
Music
Most of us also listen to music in order to experience emotions. … Perhaps the primary reason for music listening is the power that music has in stirring our emotions. Music has been reported to evoke the full range of human emotion: from sad, nostalgic, and tense, to happy, relaxed, calm, and joyous.
Because emotions enhance memory processes and music evokes strong emotions, music could be involved in forming memories, either about pieces of music or about episodes and information associated with particular music. A recent study in BMC Neuroscience has given new insights into the role of emotion in musical memory.
Playing instruments
guitar chords
Artists, music which has changes history and famous art work which has gone with them
I love this idea which is an entry to D&Ad by the design group The Chase for Royal Mail. I could do a collection of objects and information about a specific instrument. I will use the idea of the specific collection of things on the inside as I want to give an in-depth understanding of an instrument.
This is further inspiration for my outcome because I like how the information is presented and i think the layout and the style is one that i would like to use because it is clean and simple. The i could make the shape of an instrument on separate pages so when they all come together the cut outs make up an instrument and on each page I could do some typography about the separate parts that make up the instrument.
This workshop was based on making Interactive documents with various media on InDesign and how to export the file correctly so that the file remained interactive.
We started out recreating an album cover on InDesign. We then made the circles interactive so that if a certain button was pressed it would take us to a specific page.select the shape you want to create into a button.right click>Interactive>Convert to Button.I wanted the button to be made obvious it was a button when the mouse glided over it, so i changed the event to ‘On Roll Over’ t=so the button would change colour, shape, size when the mouse was over it even before it is clicked.I changed the view of the button at different stages. I then linked the button to certain pages.Make a button take you to a specific page by clicking Actions when you create the button and then choosing where you want it to take you.
Using artists to create the individual letters ANESG using their style of art. I like the bottom alphabet because its bold and it looks like ancient Aztec drawings and tattoos. It look fun and exotic. I don’t really like the top alphabet mainly because it doesn’t hold a theme throughout the letters and is a bit random, I don’t think they individual letters work well together.experimenting with colour and thinking outside the box with my letters. Creating something different. I like these alphabets because they are made up of different components, like lines and circles, and what looks like the letters cut out of pieces of paper, they’re fun and out of the of the ordinary alphabets.Developing my ideas more and beginning to get a feel for the kind of alphabet I want to draw. quick sketches of my alphabet to figure out spacing and how they’ll all look together. I like this alphabet because it is quite childish due to it being rounded and lowercase. However it could also look professional in bold black and on a simplistic background. This alphabet is thick and thin in different places, this makes it look distorted and stretched which I like.Final alphabets, this is very blocky and bold. I like how all of these letters join together and that they are not coloured on the inside the letters are actually just outlines.Another final alphabet, a different perspective on blocks. I like the depth and realness of this alphabet due to the shading I have done on the letters.
I used the Polygonal Lasso Tool to select the fish so I could delete it from my background. This is a very basic form of selecting which is quick and easy, but won’t be very accurate. To delete the fish and not leave a gap in my work i changed the contents to Content-Aware so it would take in its surroundings and fill it with the same colours to make it look more natural. The Spot Healing Tool also as the same effect but just on a smaller scale and is for my specific things like blemishes and imperfections in the image. To edit your photo to the correct filter you want go Image>Adjustments>Curves to get the right brightness and darkness, shadows and highlights which you are wanting to enhance your photo.I used the Magnetic Lasso Tool to select me from my original image and deleted the background. The Magnetic Lasso clings to prominent outlines and guesses what you are wanting to outline to make it easier for you to select specific things. I then added a layer and placed a new photo of a field on it. I then placed this new layer below the layer with me on so I would appear over the field image. This is the Eraser Tool, I used it to remove stray hairs and other bits of background from my image of me. This helped me blend more into my new background therefore making it look more real rather than just being cropped in.The Burn Tool is used to realistically darken specific chosen parts of your image by slightly darkening the original hue. I used this tool to make me look more tanned, to add some realistic shadowing and to darken the background and bottom of my image to suggest that the photo was taken on flash.
This workshop introduced how to create spreads and how to create an effective spread and the importance of keeping a theme or aesthetic through out the spread and spreads following. I began by making a single page document in InDesign then adding a page to make 2 pages next to each other which is then a ‘spread’. I began recreating this spread by David Wild from Rolling Stone on Alanis Morissette.
I used a grid to get create a more clean finished and accurate outcome for this spread. I used these Type tools to get the text accurately spaced and sized especially the Tracking tool (VA). I used the font Epitaph-Regular to recreate this outcome.
The spread has a muted colour palette with a more vivid burnt orange hue in the photography which makes it stand out and emphasises it as the focal point. The colours work well together and can be seen throughout the whole spread which makes it effective because then it gives it a consistent theme and feeling towards the spread as a whole. Due to all of the typography being the same font and the colours all being nearly the same colour this continues this feeling of consistency, however the higgledy-piggledy placing and sizing of the text brings some more depth and excitement to the spread.
Using grids to get more accurate and professional outcomes.
To set up a grid it’s Layout>Create Guides>then you pick the amount of rows and columns you want and also choose the gutter amount(space between rows and columns). For this outcome I used 12rows x 12 columns and with a gutter width of 4mm.
I started with the sample work which I was recreating I used the Colour Theme Tool to pick up the colours used within the art so I could use accurate colours in my recreation. The Colour Theme Tool, instead of just picking up one colour like the Eye Dropper Tool, it picks up selections of colours it can see to make a theme for your work. The grid I based my work around. It helped me create straighter more accurate lines and shapes and helped me proportion things better.I used basic shapes and drawing easy tools to copy the original piece.Rectangle Tool was used to create the thicker lines and when you press the shift key as you’re scaling it, it creates a perfect symmetrical square.Ellipse Tool used for the circles. Because the circles were the same scale in places I just copied them using the Alt button on my keyboard.Line Tool used to create the lines, I made sure I followed the guides to get the lines the same space apart and in the correct place.Pen Tool was used to create the shape of the triangles and the irregular 4 sided polygon at the bottom. It also allowed me to make the wiggly lines at the top. The outcome of the shapes when the guides are hidden. You can preview what your outcome will look like without all the extra guides by going View>Grids & Guides>Hide Guides, and at the same time View>Overprint Preview. The final product when I’ve added text
